smile, dammit

I really, really love this. In general, I love stories where people can outrun destiny or change fate or however. And I love her having to deal with her friend dying instead. And I love her finding love when she never expected to. Everything about this really works for me, and I think it's one of my favorite pieces of the season — which is saying a lot, since there has been a lot of amazing stuff written this season!
